DIY eggshell calcium for dogs
One of the most important supplements you will need to add to your dog's homemade diet is calcium. Unfortunately, it's really hard for dogs to get their daily requirements of calcium from food alone. Thus, an additional source is needed.
While you can purchase calcium powders, it’s super quick and easy to make your own eggshell calcium for dogs. Turns out, eggshells contain 27 essential microelements but they are mostly composed of calcium carbonate, a structure that’s very similar to our dog’s bone and teeth.
Follow the steps below to make your own eggshell calcium in a jiffy!
Step 1: Collect eggshells over the week by gently rinsing and putting the empty eggshells back into the carton.
Step 2: When you have enough collected, bring a pot of water to a boil.
Step 3: Boil the eggshells for 10 minutes.
Step 4: Preheat over to 300F and line the baking tray with parchment paper.
Step 5: Spread eggshells on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes, until dry.
Step 6: Allow the eggshells to cool, then grind in a clean coffee grinder, until you see fine powder with no sharp edges.
Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 12 months. 1 tsp. contains approximately 800-1,000 mg. of calcium. Mix appropriate amount into your dog’s food.
